Three youths from the Boston-area were chosen from more than 37,000 nominees nationwide for making a positive impact in their local communities.
“Kohl’s is proud to recognize the 182 regional winners nationwide for their dedication to making their communities a better place to live,” said Bevin Bailis, Kohl’s senior vice president, communications and public relations. “We commend these bright volunteers for being inspiring examples for others as they have made a difference in their own communities and touched the lives of others through their efforts.”
One of the Local recipients of $1,000 scholarships is Meredith Prunty, 18, Hopkinton. After learning a teenager committed suicide after being bullied, Meredith made it her mission to put an end to the problem. Meredith uses her social media sites, gives speeches and serves as the spokesperson for The Brand U R, an organization committed to promoting self-confidence.
Winners are chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome. Each regional-level winner qualifies for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of July. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf. In total, Kohl’s will recognize more than 2,300 young volunteers with nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes. Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 22,000 kids, including the 2014 winners, with more than $4.3 million in scholarships and prizes. The Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program is part of Kohl’s Cares, Kohl’s philanthropic program focused on improving the lives of children.

On Sunday, I had the most exciting day ever! I went with my Nanna (Donna Glee Reim), Mom and Auntie Mo to the NOH8 campaign at the WBoston Hotel in Boston. I was surrounded by wonderful caring people and felt such positive energy. I am a strong anti-bully advocate and very outspoken that teens can stop other teens from bullying so when I was asked to be interviewed on camera by Megan Mitchell (www.themeganmitchell.com) I was happy to share my views. My Nanna was the hit of the day though with her beautiful red hat and happy personality. She has been an outspoken advocate of all human rights since as long as I can remember. Here is a little bit about the NOH8 Campaign (I copied this from their official website ( www.noh8campaign.com) .
On November 4, 2008 Proposition 8 passed in California, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. The defeat provoked a groundswell of initiative within the GLBT community at a grassroots level, with many new political and protest organizations being formed in response.
The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska (http://www.bouska.net) and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with “NOH8” painted on one cheek in protest.
Two years since its inception, the NOH8 Campaign has grown to over 8,000 faces and continues to grow at an exponential rate. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more.
The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, appearing on various local and national news programs and publications. The images are currently being used on various social networking sites to spread the message of equality, predominantly Facebook and Twitter. Eventually the images are expected to be compiled for a large-scale media campaign.
The NOH8 Campaign is an approved 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization
Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for Marriage Equality and anti-discrimination on a global level through an educational and interactive media campaign.
